FAIRer Data through Digital Recording: The FAIMS Mobile Experience

Critical data and metadata must be captured or created in the field, shortly thereafter, to avoid loss. For past 10 years, Field Acquired Information Management Systems (FAIMS) project has developed operated a customisable field capture platform. Over time, we built features approaches that incorporated Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable (FAIR) principles into born-digital datasets during fieldwork. This paper synthesises our experience helping more than 40 projects adapt FAIMS platform nearly 70 research workflows archaeology other fieldwork domains. We review what elements of FAIR Data Principles was able build software, how users received these capabilities, sociotechnical challenges impeded creation FAIRer data. Based on experience, argue software can facilitate production data, making those much Findable Reusable, somewhat Accessible Interoperable. Any such improvements, however, depend upon (1) FAIR-data an integral part collection systems, minimising burden imposed researchers, (2) researchers’ willingness spend time resources implementing do not provide immediate benefits their research.
